BEACHPORT, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – Australia has verified the presence of H5N1 bird flu in a long-nosed fur seal found deceased at Beachport in South Australia. This event signifies the first confirmed case of a mammal infected amid the outbreak on mainland Australia. The authorities announced the laboratory results following urgent analysis of samples taken from the animal. This discovery expands the scope of the mainland outbreak beyond wild avian populations for the first time. Officials clarified that no evidence of a cluster involving other sick or dead marine mammals nearby has been identified.

Australia confirms H5N1 in mainland long-nosed fur seal
Australia confirms H5N1 in a mainland mammal as the bird flu outbreak affects wildlife.

A member of the public reported the dead seal on August 19, noticing it showed no visible injuries. Initial testing conducted by the state yielded inconclusive results, leading officials to send samples for additional testing. CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness later confirmed that the seal was infected with H5 bird flu. Beachport is situated on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, an area where authorities have documented infections among wild seabirds. Since H5N1 arrived in mainland Australia earlier this year, the region has become one of several coastal zones impacted by the virus.

By August 23, South Australia had reported 194 confirmed H5 bird flu cases, with 11 new confirmations recorded on that day. These cases involved various species, including greater crested terns, a gannet, a little penguin, a silver gull, and a black-faced cormorant. The state now considers outbreaks as events, which may involve single or multiple animals at a specific location. As of Sunday, Australia had documented 298 positive H5 bird flu events nationwide, with South Australia accounting for the largest share of these detections.

Mainland Outbreak Extends Beyond Wild Birds

The outbreak on the mainland began after H5N1 appeared in migratory seabirds in June 2026. Subsequent testing confirmed the virus in native, non-migratory seabirds, including greater crested terns. The number of affected wild birds has continued to rise across several states. During August, South Australia reported mass mortality events involving over 1,000 greater crested terns. The strain circulating in Australia belongs to H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, known to affect wild birds, poultry, and mammals elsewhere globally.

Despite these wildlife detections, authorities have not recorded any H5N1 infections in Australian poultry or other livestock. The Australian Centre for Disease Control maintains a low risk assessment for the general population. To date, there have been no locally acquired human cases of the H5N1 strain linked to the current outbreak. Health officials state that human infection typically requires close contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. They advise avoiding touching sick or dead birds and other wildlife.

Past H5N1 Cases on Remote Territories

Previously, Australia confirmed H5N1 in southern elephant seals on Heard Island, a remote external territory in the Southern Ocean. Laboratory analysis confirmed those infections in November 2025, months before the virus reached the Australian mainland. Later testing identified H5 bird flu in additional wildlife on the island, such as Antarctic fur seals and gentoo penguins. Consequently, the Beachport case marks the first confirmed mammal infection associated with the current mainland outbreak and the first detection in a native mammal on the continent.

Authorities continue wildlife surveillance as H5N1 circulates among seabirds along Australia’s coast. Officials have urged the public to stay away from sick or dead wildlife and to record any sightings. Such reports assist animal health teams in identifying new potential events and guiding testing efforts in affected areas. Ongoing monitoring across wildlife, agriculture, and public health systems remains in place as the outbreak unfolds. The confirmed case involving the Beachport seal broadens the spectrum of species impacted by Australia’s mainland H5N1 outbreak.
